Narrative based medicine: narrative in medical ethics.
نویسنده
چکیده
References The contributions of narrative to medical ethics come primarily in two ways: firstly, from the use of stories (narratives) for their mimetic content—that is, for what they say; and secondly, from the methods of literary criticism and narrative theory for their analysis of diegetic form—that is, for their understanding of how stories are told and why it matters. Although narrative and narrative theory, like the form and content of a literary work, are inextricably bound up with each other, I will discuss them separately to help chart the evolving appreciation for the importance of narrative in the work of medical ethics.

Literature and medicine: narrative ethics.
The primary focus of literature’s first decade as part of the formal curriculum of some American medical schools (1972–81) was on teaching literary works to help develop students’ capacity for empathy, to enhance their skills in interpretation, and to complement the teaching of traditional medical ethics. These early concerns of literature and medicine have been discussed in the eight previous ...

Narrative in Ethics We hear stories and tell stories every day we practice medicine, without appreciating that the resolutions we seek in ethical dilemmas often unfold from the stories of our patients, their families, and our colleagues. Sickness and healing are, in part, narrative acts. Patients write about their illnesses with increasing frequency, which suggests that finding the words to contain the chaos of illness enables the sufferer to endure it better (1–3). We physicians, too, write more and more frequently about ourselves and our practices (4, 5). In many forms of narrative writing, doctors are endorsing the hypothesi...
متن کاملDoctors' stories, patients' stories: a narrative approach to teaching medical ethics.
Many senior doctors have had little in the way of formal ethics training, but express considerable interest in extending their education in this area. This paper is the report of an initiative in continuing medical education in which doctors were introduced to narrative ethics. We review the theoretical basis of narrative ethics, and the structure of and response to the two-day workshop.

Psychiatry is perhaps the most "narrative" of all medical specialties, but here as elsewhere clinical skills are in danger of being lost as evidence-based medicine becomes the dominant paradigm in medical culture. Psychotherapy is a quintessentially narrative discipline. Starting from an "attachment" perspective, the uses of narrative in psychotherapy are outlined. These include the importance ...
